Whitley Street £1 Fare Branding

17-03-12

In the last couple of days of February new lettering was applied to most of the route 5 OmniDekkas and half of the route 5/6 Olympuses to promote the recently introduced £1 fare between Whitley Street and the Town Centre. The lettering is located within the silver swoosh and reads "now £1 between Whitley St. & town each way". The promotion is one of the latest in a line of experiments with £1 fares for specific short hop journeys to encourage increased ridership, which in this case was introduced in October 2011.

Following a number of trials with how the destination displays with colour facilities are used, in most cases things seems to have settled on using the relevant route colour on a black background. Since soon after the colour displays were first introduced the coloured information would be outlined in white to try and offer more contrast for darker colours, and recent trials saw the whole area behind the route number put in white or light blue, but both weren't very satisfactory. Now each route has been looked at individually, with only dark blue 33 retaining a white background. The OmniCity double deckers with full colour displays have been looked at separately again, and have been noted showing full pink displays for the Caversham pink routes, purple for the 17 and yellow for the 26. The 'Sorry I'm Not in Service' displays on all of these are shown in black letters on a pink background!

Russell Street Closure

17-03-12

The unexpected closure of Russell Street from 23rd February for emergency sewer repairs meant that Jet Black 1, Vitality 2, Yellow 26 and route 33 had to be diverted back to their traditional Town Centre route of Castle Hill, Castle Street and St Mary's Butts. Services returned to normal after repairs were completed on 7th March, although at one point the closure was set to last until 14th.
